Tooth Whitening - Remedies For Whitening Teeth

White teeth are all the rage these days.  With each day that passes, there are new and improved ways to whiten your teeth. Tooth whitening can be done in the convenience of your home or at your dentist office.

Before starting any home tooth whitening be sure to check with your dentist. Since individual results can vary, he or she can let you know if you are a candidate for teeth whitening.  Generally, yellowish teeth whiten better than brownish or grayish teeth.

Studies show that tooth whitening toothpastes do not work. They appear to do the same thing as plain toothpaste. However, they generally cost a lot more.

That does not mean that you can not get the same tooth whitening results at home. There are many over the counter remedies on the market today. Teeth whitening products that contain hydrogen peroxide tend to work the best.

Home remedies are also available. However, not all are safe to use for the purpose of teeth whitening. For example, lemon juice works great to whiten teeth. But regardless, it should not be used for teeth whitening purposes. The lemon juice robs the teeth of the needed calcium and therefore can cause cavities. Calcium is vital in keeping teeth healthy. As well, the lemon juice can cause irreversible damage to your teeth.

One of the best home remedies for teeth whitening is baking soda and hydrogen peroxide.  However, since the baking soda is abrasive, it can wear away the enamel on the teeth if used too much. As well, the over use of hydrogen peroxide can cause the teeth to be sensitive to hot and cold. So they both should be used on a limited basis.

When you think of teeth whitening tips, you probably do not think of strawberries. However, strawberries can naturally whiten your teeth. The acid in the strawberries removes the discoloration of your teeth. Mixing the juice from the strawberries, with basking soda, helps to remove coffee stains, dark soda stains and red wine stains. Although it can be used on occasion, it should not be used as a replacement for more traditional whitening methods.

There are many teeth whitening alternatives available. So no matter what your budget there is whitening product available. Just keep in mind to check with your dentist before starting any whitening process, in order to prevent permanent damage to your teeth.
